Now this is a true story for the most
That occurred on the top floor of
Bigwig executive's office in Nashville, Tennessee
Now understand I'm not poking any fun or anybody
God knows I love country with all my heart and soul
And I the Grand Ole Opry
But I do a problem with someone who
Can't even play a D chord on a
Telling someone a dream that they won't get far
So this song is to all those underdogs like me
Out running around
get discouraged if you have a dream
Don't be afraid to it down
It's how it

He said, "Son, get offended by what I'm about to say
I can see you a passion
For the songs you and play
But you lack we all call commercial appeal
And you just don't have it takes
To make it in Nashville"

Well my heart felt like a wreck
But I wore a smile on my
I said, "Thank you for time, sir"
Put my guitar in its case
Our little conversation was like a
Redirecting my
'Cause God knows I'd never sell my soul to 'n' roll
Or rap or those tight skinny jeans

you know I'd rather sing my own songs
Than be a puppet on a
I'll wear what I to wear
I'm gonna sing what I wanna
knows all I need
Is my faith, my fans, my and my family
Besides I'd rather be an old fence in Texas
Than the of Tennessee

So I loaded up my old pickup
And I drove home to Amarillo
Got a gig off old 66
At ballroom called The Armadillo
And for the first shows or so
Not a soul up
I thought about quitting every day
But I just kept on that cup

Yeah, I kept kicking can surrounded by
Blood, sweat, and
And wouldn't you know I became an overnight
In over ten years
And now I'm out all the dance halls
And the rodeos night
I got a pretty wife, a ranch, a band, a bus, a
I'd say I'm alright

And you know I'd rather sing my own
be a puppet on a string
I'll what I want to wear
I'm gonna sing what I sing
Heaven all I need
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
Besides I'd rather be an old fence post in
the king of Tennessee

Oh, how 'bout a front porch picking, boys

Well, wouldn't you that old record man
Showed up one at this honky tonking bar
my show he said,
"Son, I you might be the next big country star"
He said, "We like how you it raw
We like how you keeping it
And I you may just have what
We all like to call appeal"
Huh, ain't that
Well, sir

I'd rather my own songs
Than be a on a string
wear what I want to wear
And I'm gonna sing I wanna sing
knows all I need
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
I'd rather be an old fence post in Texas
Than the king of
God bless
But I'd rather be just an old fence post in
Than my soul to rock 'n' roll
Or rap or wear those tight skinny
